A Tale of Two Tunnels
Speedpro Imaging of Portland | Portland, Oregon
Rod Carlson, owner of Speedpro Imaging of Portland in Portland, Oregon, had only been in business three years when an elephant-sized opportunity came across his desk.
“We were offered the chance to bid on producing and installing wall graphics for the commuter train tunnels below the Portland Zoo,” said Carlson. The designs were to be some of the largest wall graphics found in Oregon.
Power to Tackle Jumbo-Sized Projects
Fortunately, Carlson’s shop is equipped with a Roland DG SOLJET Pro 4 XR-640 64-inch printer/cutter, as well as a 64-inch Roland DG GX-640 large-format cutter.
When the final approvals for the work came through, Carlson’s shop moved into overdrive. For the two murals, Speedpro Imaging of Portland produced more than 11,000 square feet of material. “Our SOLJET really came through. The color matching was excellent,” Carlson noted.
It took Carlson’s team 120 hours over about five weeks to complete the printing and installation of 450 panels, each measuring 54“ x 96”. The colorful wall murals were a hit with passengers of all ages.
Versatility for the Win
In addition to wall murals, Carlson’s shop produces window and vehicle graphics, as well as indoor and outdoor signage, decals, banners, product labels, and tradeshow and event signage.
Carlson keeps a variety of print samples in his shop to show customers the detail and resolution their printer can produce. “Our print samples are some of our best sales materials,” said Carlson.
Carlson’s clients run the gamut from small entrepreneurships to medium- and large-sized businesses. They also do work on the wholesale side, providing wall and window graphics for architecture and design firms.
Carlson operates with a lean staff of two full time employees. “With our SOLJET, our small crew can be extremely productive,” he said.

It was a huge opportunity by any measure. Carlson submitted his bid, and won the job.
