Changing Times Call for New Technology in Graphic Communications

Ryerson University provides the only degree in print media in all of Canada:  the Bachelor of Technology in Graphic Communications Management.  With over 600 students in its four-year program, Ryerson is at the forefront of the changes in the graphic communications industry.

Recently Ryerson incorporated large-format digital printing, bringing in the Roland DG XR-640 SOLJET Pro 4 large-format color printer/cutter.  “It just makes sense to introduce our students to the technology they will use as they move forward in their careers,” said Dr. Abhay Sharma, professor in the School of Graphic Communications Management.

“We always look for the best known brands with strong market penetration –Roland DG has an excellent reputation and a really good, wide range of devices,” he said.  Ryerson students use digital printing in mandatory courses such as “Printing Processes,” “Pre-media” and “Management of Workflow.”   Projects include production of decals, banners and floor graphics. 

“Working on the XR-640 is giving our students real world skills for the workplace,” said Dr. Sharma. “It is the ideal digital production platform for the next generation of printing professionals.”

“Our students are required to use the printer every day, so our equipment needs to be easy to use, reliable and robust,” said Sharma.  Sharma said the students are looking forward to incorporating the XR’s white and metallic ink capabilities in their projects and to expanding their range of applications to include heat transfers and vehicle wraps.   “The XR is a flagship device. It prints beautifully and is very fast.  The students can be very creative with their projects,” said Sharma.

One focus in the Graphic Communication Management curriculum is learning to operate RIP software to maximize production efficiency.  “We concentrate on using the software to gang and tile jobs for optimal workflows,” said Sharma.  “We start off with Roland DG’s VersaWorks because is very user-friendly.”
